External Counter Pulsation / Enhanced External Counter Pulsation (ECP/EECP)

Prevent and reverse heart disease by creating natural heart bypass

What is ECP/EECP?

ECP / EECP is a truly safe, non-surgical, non-pharmaceutical, mechanical treatment procedure to reduce the symptoms of Angina Pectoris and Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) by increasing blood flow to the heart. ECP/EECP has been around for decades dating back to the orginal research at Harvard in the 1950’s.  ECP/EECP Therapy is FDA approved for the treatment of Angina Pectoris from Coronory Artery Disease.External Counter Pulsation Therapy is growing in

popularity due to the treatment being a low risk, non-surgical treatment at a fraction of the cost of other traditional invasive procedures.

How it works?

In ECP/EECP, patient wears a series of pressure cuffs (like large blood pressure cuffs) around the legs and lies on a bed. The cuffs inflate and deflate electronically synchronised with the heart beat (ECG) and move the blood from the legs towards the heart. The increased blood flow is delivered to the heart's blood vessels at the

precise moment it is relaxing i.e. during diastole when blood flow through the coronary vessels is at its peak. When done repeatedly, this increases collateral circulation, thus, creating bypass naturally without surgery. Each ECP/EECP session is of one hour and one or two sessions can be done in one day. Treatment can be performed 5 to 7 days a week and usually 35 one hour sessions are required. Treatment can be completed in 3 weeks time minimum. ECP/EECP causes immediate and sustained increase in heart's blood supply by:

  • Dilating coronary blood vessels

  • Opening dormant collaterals

  • Creating new blood vessels (angiogenesis)

Who should have ECP/EECP?

  • Patients suffering from Coronary Artery Disease (CAD)

  • Patients with chronic chest pain (Refractory Angina)

  • Patients who have previously had bypass surgery to unsatisfactory or failed results

  • Patients who have previously had angioplasty to unsatisfactory or failed results

  • High risk patients, unfit for bypass

  • Patients requiring post-bypass cardiac rehabilitation

  • Patients with difficult to treat small vessel disease

  • Patients experiencing re-blocks after bypass surgery or angioplasty

  • Patients experiencing chronic renal disease along with heart problems

  • Patients experiencing pain in legs due to Peripheral Artery Disease

  • Patients suffering from Renal Hypertension

  • Patients suffering from Cerebral Ischemia affecting their memory and mental ability

  • Patients suffering from Cerebral Thrombosis causing paresis

  • Patients suffering from Chronic Fatigue (Tiredness) Syndrome

  • Patients not willing for surgical intervention

Benefits of ECP/EECP

  • Non-invasive

  • Affordable

  • No anaesthesia required

  • Improved oxygen uptake

  • Increased physical exercise capacity

  • Short treatment time

  • No long term recovery period

  • Usually no hospital stay required

  • Reduction of medicines for chest pain

  • Increased blood flow at the treated area

  • No acute or long-term side-effects

  • Compliments ongoing therapies

How does the patient know he has improved?

Patients experience improvement in their quality of life. They feel better, test better, have less frequency and intensity of chest pains, breath better, can walk longer distance and require less medication. They have increased energy and work capacity, memory, mental ability, sexual performance, less fatigue, lesser leg pains and improved general look and skin

colour.Improvements can also be assessed scientifically with Cardiovascular Cartography (CCG)or Stress Thallium tests as they document the blood flow. Angiography assesses the patency and stenosis in three big blood vessels and their major branches but is not suitable for visualizing the millions of smaller blood vessels and capillaries, nor for assessing the overall blood flow to the heart muscle which is what ultimately matters.

Success rate of ECP/EECP

We at Sibia Medical Centre have been performing ECP/EECP since 2002 and have experience that over 90% of our patients respond positively towards the treatment and experience remarkable improvements in their conditions.

Safety of ECP/EECP

ECP/EECP is non-invasive and, in the case of musculoskeletal diseases, can be performed without the risks associated with surgical procedures. Additionally, the rate of complications resulting from ECP/EECP therapy is considered negligible, with no reports of arrhythmias, heart failure, syncope, palpitations, breathing difficulty, bleeding, embolism, shock, or troponin.
